LITERATURE

The beginning of American literature comes from European styles and forms;
is for this reason it is also known as part of English literature.

The literature is diveded into five main group:

•The symbolism
•The Realism
•The Naturalism
•The Transcendentalism
•Border literature

The main authors is:


Benjamin Franklin


Political scientist and inventor. Benjamin Franklin attended elementary school only, and these only until the age of tenyears. At twelve he began working as a printer in a company owned by one of hisbrothers. Later he founded the newspaper The Pennsylvania Gazette, which published between 1728 and 1748. It also published the Poor Richard's Almanac (1732-1757) and was responsible for the issuance of paper money in the British colonies in America (1727) and published his autobiography.


Walt Whitman


was a poet, essayist, journalist and humanist U.S.. His work is part of the transition between Transcendentalism and Realism, incorporating both movements to his work. Whitman is among the most influential American writers of the canon (which has been considered the center) and has been called the father of free verse.

His work was controversial in its time, particularly for his boock “leaves of grass”, described as obscene for its overt sexuality. His influence has been extensive, beingregarded as the father of modern American poetry.


Mark Twain

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by the pseudonym Mark Twain was a popular American writer and humorist.in Colombia we know for his work The adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), novelization of some characters in the author's childhood in Hannibal.


Henry James

Was an American writer and literary critic (though he spent much time in Europe and became a naturalized British near the end of his life) from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, known for his novels and stories based on conscience. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and brother of the philosopher and psychologist William James. his masterpiece is "daisy miller".


Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway was a writer and journalist, and one of the leading novelist sand short story writers of the twentieth century. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for “The Old man and the sea” and the following year the Nobel Prize for Literature for his life work.
